WRVS – helping people in need

Monday, May 9, 2011

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently visited the WRVS café at the Hallamshire hospital to meet regional Service Delivery Manager Paul Taylor to learn more about the new look organisation.

The WRVS provide a support system which helps people as they go into, and leave hospital. They believe that with good preparation, this transition can be made easier and in the longer term older people will be able to live more independently for longer.

Originally known as the Women’s Voluntary Service for Air Raid Precautions, WRVS was founded over 70 years ago to support local communities in times of need. Today, they help thousands of people to live the way they want, and provide personal and practical support through the dedication of local volunteers.

The modern day WRVS has recently seen some structural changes to try and provide a better service. In the community, WRVS volunteers help people feel safe and secure at home, through socials and lunch clubs and good neighbourhood schemes.

Meg said:

“It was really interested to meet Paul and learn more about the work of WRVS. From my background in social work I know how important good preparation can be when helping older people readjust to changes such as going in and out of hospital.

All the volunteers at WRVS work very hard to provide the best possible service.”
