Catching up at the College

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently visited Norton College to meet Principal Andrew Cropley for a catch up on how things are going at the facility.

They discussed the new educational partnership that was recently launched, the Norton Meadowhead Partnership. One hundred and thirty five A-level students are studying across the Norton College and Meadowhead School establishments. It increases the number of A-level places available, and provides a broader choice and greater range of subject combinations for the local community.

Norton College has seen successes of late, with great events such as the Sheffield College Spark Awards and the first ever GreenScreen Film Challenge. The College is also embarking on efforts to create a new University Technical College in Sheffield.  The project aims to boost the skills of 14 to 19-year-olds entering the advanced engineering and manufacturing, and digital and new media sectors, through a new academy.

The College is facing a difficult time at the moment due to budget cuts with redundancies of staff. Andrew and his team have been working hard to reduce the numbers of compulsory redundancies as much as possible.

Meg said:

“This was a very interesting meeting with Andrew. We discussed the importance of the Educational Maintenance Award, reward schemes, staffing and funding changes. It was good to hear about the things that are going well, as well as the challenges that the College is facing, particularly on funding.

I also had a chance to visit one of the class rooms and meet some children who were on a placement at the College.”
