The High Sheriff is in town!

Monday, May 23, 2011

Recently Meg Munn MP met the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, to discuss his plans to promote the County during his term of office.

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent non-political Royal appointment for a single year. The origins of the Office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the shire, or county, and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown. Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales each year.

Of course, the duties and role have evolved over time, but supporting the Crown and judiciary remain central elements of the role today. These days High Sheriffs play an increasingly active and supportive role within their Counties. Both in relation to the Police and emergency services and in lending encouragement to public sector agencies such as the probation and prison services and to voluntary sector organisations involved in crime reduction and social cohesion.

Since taking on the position Andrew has been keen to make contact with as many people as he can who contribute to the wellbeing and promotion of the County.

Meg said:

“It was a pleasure to meet Andrew and discuss his thoughts and plans for and around the constituency.”
