Meg supports a new Road Safety Bill

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn gave her full support to Sir Alan Beith’s Bill on road safety which was introduced into the House of Commons on the 18th May. This Bill aims to improve the safety of cyclists on the road, particularly from Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV).

The particular problem the Bill tackles is of poor visibility in driver blind spots. The Bill would therefore aim to make technology available, such as motion sensors and better mirrors, which Sir Alan Beith states are a ‘vital weapon’ in saving lives.

The Bill reads as follows:  That leave be given to bring in a Bill to require the Secretary of State to make provision requiring the fitting of equipment to heavy goods vehicles to eliminate driver blind spots; to make other provisions relating to the safety of cyclists, pedestrians and other road users; and for connected purposes.

Meg has been campaigning on the issue of road safety for a number of years. In particular she has been working on the issue of Sleep Apnoea, a condition causing sufferers to fall asleep during the day due to having a health condition. She is also becoming increasingly concerned with the safety of cyclists on the road, particularly following the recent tragic death of Eilidh Cairns, who was killed by a lorry while cycling.

Meg commented:

“Considering 400 Europeans die every year because of HGV blindspots, it is time action was taken on this issue. Sir Alan Beith’s Bill provides an excellent way forward.”
