UK funds for preservation of Auschwitz welcomed

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has welcomed the news that the UK Government will contribute 2.1 million over the next three years towards the preservation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation will receive the funds to ensure the camp will continue to educate people about the Holocaust and the particular role of this facility.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site of the largest mass murder in human history, more than a million people were murdered by the Nazis during World War II and it remains an iconic symbol of the Holocaust. The Government’s commitment of funding, as well as donations to the Foundation from the rest of the international community, ensures the future for the camp as a warning from history.

It will cost in total more than 100 million to maintain Auschwitz-Birkenau over the next 10 to 15 years. The announcement of the UK’s contribution follows a commitment made by the previous Government.

Meg said:

“The Government’s announcement of funds will ensure that when future generations visit Auschwitz-Birkenau they will see for themselves what can happen when racism and prejudice are allowed to go unchecked.”
