Possible cataract delays locally?

Friday, June 3, 2011

Meg Munn MP met representatives from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) at an event in Parliament recently to learn more about the availability of cataract surgery for the people of Sheffield.

The RNIB is very concerned about reports that suggest cataract operations are an easy target for savings by NHS managers. Delaying cataract operations is a false economy.  A patient whose sight is restricted by a cataract will at some stage absolutely need surgery.

Cataract surgery is safe and has been shown to be both cost effective and clinically effective, yet evidence collected by RNIB and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists show that many Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are introducing policies to restrict access to this surgery.  Meg was pleased to hear that this is not the case in Sheffield. The local PCT’s policy means that patients in this area should continue to receive this cost-effective surgery without needless delay.

Meg said:

"While other areas are reporting delays and cuts to cataract surgery, I was pleased to learn that Sheffield PCT is continuing to provide patients with treatment in line with The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ guidelines.

However, other PCTs in the region have implemented restrictive policies, so I will be monitoring the situation carefully, and have contacted our local PCT to make them aware of my concerns and desire to be consulted on any proposed changes."

Steve Winyard, Head of Campaigns at RNIB, said

"At RNIB we believe that cataract surgery should be performed when consultants, in discussion with their patients, have decided that it is in the patients’ best interest, and in line with The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ guidelines. We are pleased to report that the policy of Sheffield PCT continues to offer patients good access to this effective treatment."
