Good news for Broadband in Greenhill

Tuesday, May 6, 2003

Meg Munn, Sheffield Heeley Labour MP has welcomed news that the telephone exchange at Greenhill is being broadband enabled on 7th May. This means that many of her constituents will be able to enjoy the benefits of broadband - whether for business or pleasure.

Meg said "This is great news for local businesses and domestic internet users in the Greenhill area. They will now have access to the internet, through their telephone exchange at speeds of up to 10 times faster than the 56k you can get with a regular modem and with connections that are "always on". What this means to business in particular is the ability to send large files, documents, plans and photos to each other very much more quickly. I hope it will also encourage more people to consider working from home in the Greenhill area."

People who want to register to use broadband, and who have a BT phone line can do so with any one of dozens of ISP providers. More information is available at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ - your guide to Broadband internet.

Notes to Editor:

Broadband works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two, one for voice and the other for data. ADSL technology can work at up to 8Mbps download. The most popular services in the UK at the moment are running at speeds of 512Kbps (approx. 9 times faster than a modem), although speeds of up to 2Mbps can be obtained. Upload speeds are 256Kbps on all products.
