Police pay and conditions

Monday, June 27, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently had a meeting with constituent and local policeman Phil Shaw to discuss current government proposals on police pay and conditions and how he sees them. Following the meeting Meg agreed to contact again Home Office Minister Nick Herbert to highlight these concerns and ask for greater clarification on the proposals.

Both Meg and Phil accepted that budget cuts had to be made, but the proposals for the police amount to around a 20% cut, which is disproportionate compared to other public services. In relation to pay there is particular concern that not only is there a two year pay freeze but in addition there is a freeze on increments.

In addition Phil had significant concerns about the proposals for changes to pensions arising out of the Hutton review. One of his concerns is that the police already pay significantly more into their pensions than other public sector workers in order that they can take it earlier, but that the proposed changes may mean even higher payments. There is also concern about raising the retirement age to 60 given the nature of the role that police officers undertake in society where being fit and able is essential.
