Future manufacturing here and now

Monday, July 11, 2011

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn joined a number of her fellow South Yorkshire MPs for a visit to the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) located at Catcliffe. The meeting was an opportunity for them to learn more about the work of the AMRC and the projects that are currently in the pipeline.

The AMRC is a world-class centre for advanced machining and materials research for aerospace and other high-value manufacturing sectors. They operate two purpose-built, factory-scale research facilities, one being the Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future building which is a 4600 sq metre facility including workshop, laboratory, office and conference space. The other building provides 1,800 sq metre of workshop space plus offices and meeting rooms and currently houses the Composite Centre and the Advanced Structural Testing Centre (ASTC).

Meg was particularly excited to meet engineer Shirley Harrison and Project Manager Emma Hutton to discuss her project about women in the science, engineering and technology sectors. The women have planned for a future meeting to discuss in greater detail the work that needs to be done to get more women into these important sectors of the economy.  For details see Unlocking Potential: perspectives on women in science, engineering & science

“Wow, what a visit! The work that is happening at AMRC is truly amazing, the speed at which they are modernising processes and reducing production time is impressive. They are at the forefront of what is happening in the aerospace world, producing the highest quality product at speed.

AMRC are also very active in providing apprenticeships, and I was lucky enough to meet a couple on our walk around the site, and both said how much they enjoy their work.”
