Ending disability hate crime

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Mencap’s Stand by me campaign has been given the support of Heeley MP Meg Munn at the launch recently. The campaign will challenge the police, the criminal justice system and the courts to take the lead in ending hate crime against people with a learning disability.

Meg said:

“Mencap’s Stand by me campaign should help police forces in changing the way they deal with hate crime.  I welcome and offer my support for the campaign, which aims to protect people with a learning disability across the country.”

Donal MacIntyre, the investigative journalist, also attended the launch of Mencap’s report Don’t stand by.  Donal help to uncover the abuse of people with a learning disability in a care home in Kent 11 years ago as part of the BBC series, MacIntyre Investigates.  He said:

“Hate crime is a serious issue for disabled people and their families and has a major and long-lasting impact on how people live their lives.  Sadly many police services are failing to support victims of disability hate crime. Without the full support from the police disability hate crime victims are left to suffer in silence.”
