Sheffield and St Helena

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Sheffield MP Meg Munn recently met Mandy Peters, Chief Executive of Solomons, and representatives of the Sheffield office of Auditors Grant Thorntons. Solomons operate the majority of trading business on St Helena in the South Atlantic, and last year Grant Thornton’s Sheffield Office won the tender to undertake the audit of their annual financial statement. In May their staff made the long and arduous journey to St Helena to undertake the first annual visit.

An important issue in the discussion between Meg and Mandy was the development of an airport on St Helena, a facility which would dramatically reduce the time it takes to reach the Island a round trip by sea usually takes at least 2 weeks. Mandy outlined the many benefits that would come, including the opportunity for tourism and development of more businesses. The Island currently relies on financial support from the UK and many local people, known as Saints, have to leave to find work leading to a breakdown in families and communities.

Meg has had an interest in St. Helena, one of Britain’s most isolated Overseas Territories, since she was a Minister at the Foreign Office, she is also currently vice chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the island. Paul Houghton a partner at Grant Thorntons alerted Meg to Mandy’s visit.

Meg said:

“It was really useful to hear from Mandy about the difference an airport would make. I will continue to press the Department for International Development to move ahead with this important infrastructure project which will have many benefits.”
