Hydro-electric power for Sheffield

Friday, August 5, 2011

Meg Munn MP has given her support for the work of local company Sheffield Renewables who are engaged on two renewable energy schemes which will take the city forward into the green age. During a visit to their office Meg met Cariad Cooke, a part time staff member and volunteer, who outlined the company’s hydro-electric projects in Jordan Dam and Kelham Island.

The Jordan Dam project is the fastest moving, with planning permission already granted and the local community very positive. The scheme will generate around 310,000kWh of electricity per year. This is the amount used by about 80 typical family homes, providing a saving of around 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year! Now that planning permission has been secured the plan is to gather the funds necessary to begin the installation work on the project.

With volunteers leading the scheme’s development, Sheffield Renewables is keen to ensure that ownership resides within the city community. The aim will be to raise 250,000 towards the scheme through a community share offer in the autumn, providing an ethical investment opportunity for individuals, organisations and businesses. The objective is to pay people a certain percentage of their investment back each year (after a three year grace period to establish the project) with hopefully a little extra on top to ensure the investor doesn’t lose out because of inflation.

Meg Commented:

“The new projects at Sheffield Renewables are a fine example of how local businesses are beginning to make a real impact on our environment. The dedication and enthusiasm of the Sheffield Renewables team is inspiring to see and I give them my full support.”
