Legal Aid Bill threatens those in need

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

The Legal Aid Bill has caused a great deal of controversy because of the possible effects it could have on families and individuals in desperate need of legal advice. Meg Munn MP recently visited Howells solicitors in the city centre to discuss the implications should the present Bill be passed.  She met representatives from all the different departments of Howells including, criminal defence, immigration and family law.

The legal professionals outlined how 40,000 cases are in danger of not even being heard due to the massive cuts in legal aid, exposing those in dire situations to second rate legal advice. The government plan to end legal aid for: private family law cases such as divorce and custody battles, clinical negligence claims, employment and education law, immigration (other than where someone is detained), some debt and housing and benefit issues.

Meg said:

“If the Legal Aid Bill passes as it currently is then many throughout the country will suffer.

We do have enough time before this Bill is due to becomes law to challenge it and persuade the government to change their mind over important elements within it”
