Supporting the deaf and hard of hearing in Sheffield

Thursday, August 11, 2011

The Deaf Advice Services Sheffield (DASS) provide advice and support on many areas of life for deaf and hard of hearing people and their families across the city. Meg Munn MP recently visited the charity to find out about their work.

A group of staff and volunteers discussed with Meg the importance of the service in helping the deaf and hard of hearing perform tasks that may seem simple to the un-impaired, such as paying bills, arranging employment, and family and relationship issues. The manager of the service, Kate Bushen, explained that DASS is a unique scheme being the only one of its kind in the country. It is run by both hearing and deaf advisors, which means that the advice given is culturally relevant as the advisor will have a thorough understanding of the deaf community.

Kate advised Meg how the recession has hit DASS hard as council funding plays a vital part in the charity’s running. The current council funding cut of 7.5% means everyone at DASS is feeling the strain.

Meg commented:

“DASS is not simply a deafness charity but a lifeline for those struggling with daily tasks. Many people do not understand the difficulty of being even slightly hearing impaired, and as volunteers at DASS told me, deaf awareness needs to be pushed forward on our agenda.

I fully support this valuable service and will do what I can to help ensure it stays open.”
