Women, sport and equality

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Meg was asked to contribute to a discussion on the topic of women, sport and equality by Headsup for their online discussion forum for those under 18 her contribution is below.

Meg said:

“It is enormously important that women and girls are encouraged to play more sport. It’s not just about getting fit, sport improves mental health, is fun and gives busy women a break from their responsibilities. Yet from local level to professional there’s more money for men than women, more men in top jobs and more media coverage of men playing sport.

How can it be fair that the women’s England football team were paid just 40 a day at the 2007 World Cup compared to England men’s team captain John Terry who got a whopping 10 million for the 2010 World Cup? On average male footballers are paid 20 times more than women! It was 2007 before Wimbledon paid equal prize money to men and women.

Organisations such as the Women and Sports Fitness Foundation are working to give equal opportunities to women in sport. Progress is being made, however more needs to be done. We don’t accept inequality like this in other areas of life, why should sport be different?”
