Brits miss out in Europe

Monday, October 3, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently visited the London office of the European Commission to meet Jonathan Scheele, Head of Representation, and John Evans, Language Officer. Meg, a keen linguist, wanted to hear about the work the Commission is doing to promote language learning in the UK.

Lack of expertise in languages by the British means that we miss out on job opportunities across the European Union. If the allocation of jobs reflected the size of the UK British people would hold around 12% of jobs, but actually hold only 6%. Many people have the mistaken view that jobs are only focused on translation but being proficient in another language opens up opportunities for many other professions. For this reason the Commission is keen to encourage universities to offer language learning to all students.

The European Commission tries to raise the profile of language learning through contact with schools and universities. It encourages young people to take part in Europe wide translation competitions and has a wide range of materials about the European Union written at a basic level in European languages.

Meg commented:

“I have always enjoyed learning languages and know that being able to speak another language opens up many opportunities including employment. I am supportive of the Commission’s efforts to increase language learning.”
