Perpetuating a damaging culture in science, engineering & technology

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Meg Munn MP spoke recently at the South Yorkshire launch event for the publication she edited, “Unlocking Potential: perspectives on women in science, engineering and technology”. It was held at the Advanced Manufacturing Resource Centre (AMRC) and was chaired by Pam Liversidge, Sheffield’s first women Master Cutler whose role is to act as an ambassador to promote local manufacturing and technology.

The meeting was attended by invited representatives from various businesses in these sectors, both Sheffield universities and people working at the AMRC. There were a number of contributions about the issue and a good discussion about how to change the situation to ensure all workers are encouraged to fulfil their potential.

Meg commented:

“It’s in science, engineering and technology that some businesses and university departments perpetuate a culture which leads to around 70% of women with relevant qualifications leaving, not to return. This waste of talent and skills is hugely damaging to the organisations concerned, but also to the UK economy.”
