National Childcare week and Meg Munn MP (and Alan Milburn)

Friday, June 13, 2003

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley has today added her weight to the National Childcare Week campaign (9th - 15th June 2003)

National Childcare Week is part of National Sure Start month and this year the emphasis is on men's roles both working in childcare and as active fathers. It explores why we need more men in childcare, what is stopping men from caring for children and how men could be encouraged to play a more active role in childcare.

Supporting the campaign today Meg said "We have a marvellous facility here in Sheffield at the Children's Centre where men are very much involved in childcare, but that is the exception rather than the rule. We need to see many more men engaged in child care, a positive male role model has been proven again and again to help develop interpersonal skills in our children and to counter the aggressive behaviour in young people which creates the fear of crime in our neighbourhoods.

Alan Milburn's resignation, to spend more time with his family, may have been a big surprise and have caused much speculation but it will be great news for his children. To have a father who is available to play with and learn with and to spend valuable time with is something that will mean the world to them.

He couldn't have timed his resignation any better, coinciding as it has with National Childcare Week and Father's Day" she added.
