Being WISE

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Meg Munn MP spoke at the 2011 WISE Awards ceremony recently. In her speech she outlined the facts concerning female participation in the fields of science, engineering and construction, and the need to listen to the enthusiasm of young women who have made it in these professions. The WISE Awards are an opportunity to recognise inspiring organisations and individuals actively addressing the core principals of WISE (Women into Science, Engineering and Construction).

She explained that in businesses and university departments, around 70% of women with relevant qualifications leave, not to return. In 2008, there were 620,000 female science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates of working age in the UK - but less than a third, 185,000, were employed in SET occupations. In 2010 nearly 100,000 female STEM graduates were either unemployed or economically inactive.

WISE work with industry and education to inspire girls and attract them into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. The WISE Excellence Award, The WISE Champion Award and The WISE Advisor Award were presented by WISE patron Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal.

Meg commented:

These women and young girls are an inspiration to others around the country. We must work hard together to ensure that their potentials are recognised and that they go on to have long and successful careers in the industry, benefiting not only themselves but also the UK skills market.”
