Meg leads UK trade delegation to Kurdistan

Monday, October 24, 2011

Meg Munn MP is leading a delegation of over 70 UK companies and universities at this year’s Erbil International Trade Fair in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The UK delegation is double the size of last year, and the second biggest delegation from any country. The Fair hosts more than 850 companies from over 25 countries and is not only the largest in Iraq but one of the largest in the Middle East. It showcases a wide range of goods and services in different economic sectors.

A number of UK companies at the fair are in the construction industry and are aiming to take advantage of the Kurdistan region’s building boom. There are also nine universities attending looking to benefit from the international scholarships being offered by the Kurdistan Regional Government, which helped 800 students come to the UK last year. Opportunities also exist for the development of support services such as legal systems and IT support.

The UK delegation was organised by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the Middle East Association. Meg was invited to lead the UK delegation in her role as Chair of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq All-Party Parliamentary Group and due to her knowledge of the region from previous visits. At the opening ceremony for the trade fair Meg was seated next to the Kurdistan Regional President, Masoud Barzani, and the Prime Minister, Barham Salih. Later along with the President, Prime Minister and visiting Northern Ireland Trade Minister, Arlene Foster she cut the ribbon to officially open the Fair.

The Kurdistan region has experienced rapid economic development over the past few years, enjoying 8% growth last year. There are a number of functioning oil fields with more coming on stream. It is a very stable and secure location to build business, and the regional government have enacted legislation that encourages inward investment.

Meg commented:

The Kurdish people are great friends of the UK and wish to develop more links particularly in business and education. There are many opportunities for UK enterprises that are prepared to visit, build strong connections and develop sustainable projects. I know that those businesses that have done that have been very pleased by the welcoming and positive attitude from the Kurdish business community and government.”
