Radio Sheffield hit by cuts

Monday, October 31, 2011

The BBC Trust has set out plans to reduce the local output of BBC Radio Sheffield by almost 50%. The station will have to reduce broadcasting from 16 hours of local radio every weekday to just nine hours. This could mean losing some of the stations popular local presenters with the reduced air time caused by the government’s cuts seeing up to 20% of locally employed staff losing their jobs.

Steve Wilson, City Councillor and Cabinet Advisor for Culture, has put forward a motion to the next Council meeting asking the full City Council to condemn the proposed cuts to local radio. The BBC Trust proposals are being put out to public consultation so anyone can send in their reflections and help save the local radio service.

Meg Munn MP commented:

BBC Radio Sheffield is an important way for people living in and around Sheffield to get coverage about local issues and events from presenters who are familiar with the area.

It’s also valuable way for Sheffield people to get their views heard, which is why I support a debate in the main chamber of the House of Commons about this important issue.”

The consultation runs until 21st December 2011, visit: www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust
