Remploy funding threat

Friday, November 11, 2011

Meg Munn MP recently met James Stribley, the GMB trade union representative from Remploy, to discuss the current situation there.  James told Meg that he is concerned about the government’s proposals to withdraw funding support which would probably lead to the closure of 54 Remploy factories across the country.

Remploy in Sheffield manufactures and distributes school and office furniture for local authorities as far apart as Cornwall and the north of Scotland. It provides advice and assistance to people with a disability on finding employment and James is particularly concerned that at a time of significant unemployment, people with disabilities who work at Remploy would struggle to obtain employment elsewhere. A 100,000 petition calling on the government to save Remploy factories was presented to 10 Downing Street on Monday 7th November 2011.

Meg said:

"This is a difficult time for everybody in terms of employment and I understand the concerns of people who work at Remploy. The government needs to consider the situation carefully as without real alternatives many people will end up on benefits and experience the problems that come with being out of work. I call on the government to re-consider the funding of Remploy."
