Protect yourself from UKs most common poison

Friday, November 18, 2011

The ‘Carbon Monoxide Awareness’ week starts this coming Monday to warn people how to protect themselves from this silent killer. Carbon monoxide is the most common poison in the UK today.

Victims of carbon monoxide poisoning often don’t realise they have been affected as it cannot be seen, smelled or tasted and it can kill quickly without warning. People who do survive carbon monoxide poisoning often have cognitive impairment.

Local MP Meg Munn is co-sponsoring the Household Safety (Carbon Monoxide Detectors) Bill which would require a functioning carbon monoxide detector to be installed in residential properties. The Bill, which was introduced in Parliament at the beginning of November, is expected to have its second reading debate on 25nd November 2011.

There are many groups of people who are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of carbon monoxide such as the older generation, those with heart or lung problems, pregnant mothers, unborn babies, and young children. The charity Carbon Monoxide Awareness was founded in July 2005 to raise awareness of this issue.

Meg commented:

“It’s important that we teach children as well as adults about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning to prevent everyone from being at risk. I support the work carried out by Carbon Monoxide Awareness and the Household Safety (Carbon Monoxide Detectors) Bill as it goes through the House of Commons”
