Consulting on the Northern Hub

Monday, November 28, 2011

Rail passengers at Sheffield station were invited to give their views about plans costing 530 million aimed at improving services across the north, including the line between Sheffield and Manchester. Local MP Meg Munn went along to give her views, and support, for more investment in local and regional train services.

The plans, known as the Northern Hub, were devised by Network Rail. Proposals affecting Sheffield include laying extra tracks to relieve a bottleneck at Dore Station, which is currently single track, and in the Hope Valley, to provide places where fast trains can overtake slow ones. The extra tracks would allow a faster journey time of 40 minutes between Sheffield and Manchester, and improved journey times from the city to Manchester Airport, Liverpool and other destinations to the west of Manchester.

More immediate improvements include East Midlands Trains doubling the size of most of its trains between Sheffield and Manchester from two to four carriages. Northern is also receiving extra carriages for services to and from Sheffield in the coming period.

Meg commented:

“I support more investment in the rail network for Sheffield and the wider region. It’s important for existing passengers but also to entice car drivers to leave their vehicle at home with better, cleaner and more reliable services.”
