Keep Cool at Christmas with Usdaw

Monday, December 19, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn met Usdaw representatives at a supermarket in Abbeydale to show her support for the union’s ‘Keep your Cool at Christmas’ campaign. This has been designed to help protect shop workers from violence and abuse, something Meg is very concerned about as an Usdaw member herself.

Christmas is a very busy time for shop workers, but there is also an increased risk of violence or abuse. Especially as some shoppers will have consumed more alcohol than is usual. It’s important to make sure that all staff are prepared for this possibility, and that the shop managers have made plans to keep them secure.

Meg talked to the Usdaw shop stewards about the campaign, which also forms part of the annual ‘Respect for Shop workers Week’.

Meg says:

“As well as the local MP I’m also a member of Usdaw so it’s important to hear from the staff concerned about issues that affect them. Changes in how we shop and how businesses operate can also mean that more people are on part-time contracts, and work more anti-social hours. I hope to set-up an advice surgery in the New Year so both shop workers and shoppers can come and discuss their views and concerns with me.”
