Supporting Sheffield business and manufacturing

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met Richard Wright, Executive Director of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, to discuss the plans for the City hosting the second Global Manufacturing Festival in March 2012.

The festival aims to help reaffirm the UK’s position as a global leader in advanced engineering and manufacturing innovation. Preparations are now well underway and the Chamber of Commerce is playing a lead role in the festival.

Meg and Richard also discussed the importance of supporting women working in science, technology and engineering. Currently around 70% of women with relevant qualifications leave these professions and don’t return. Meg is concerned that this figure is far too high. She is also keen to see more women benefiting from apprenticeships in these areas.

Meg said:

“It’s important that businesses are proactive and look into the reasons why so many qualified women do not stay working in science, technology and engineering roles.

I’ll be continuing to work with businesses and organisations like the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce to try and tackle what is a long-standing issue for many qualified women scientists, technologists and engineers.”
