Increasing tennis participation with Tennis For Free

Monday, January 16, 2012

As a long-time tennis player and current secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Tennis Group Meg Munn MP recently met representatives of the organisation Tennis For Free. They are a campaigning organisation working with schools, tennis clubs and local authorities using public park court facilities to create tennis communities.

John Kinder, one of the Trustee’s, and Paul Jessop, the Chief Executive, advised Meg that they provide free equipment and a 2-year free coaching programme by qualified coaches. This is available to young people and adults of all ages, standards and ability. At the end of the 2 years, a ’Friends Community Group’ is created to provide a free coaching programme with the same inclusive and welcoming ethos. Tennis For Free continues to support the scheme with technical advice and mentoring.

Meg has recently secured a debate in Westminster Hall in the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 18th January which is concerned with the future funding for tennis to which a government Minister will respond.

Meg commented:

The free tennis programmes are an effective way of tackling the decline in UK grassroots tennis participation. The meeting was a good opportunity to discuss with Tennis For Free the experiences of community tennis and opportunities for the future.”
