Tracking the changes in the gender pay gap

Thursday, February 2, 2012

The gender pay gap still affects substantial numbers of women who work in a variety of industries. A long-time campaigner on this issue, Meg Munn MP recently met Petra Wilton and Patrick Woodman of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to find out the latest research and discuss the implications.

The CMI have been tracking managerial pay by gender for over 30 years. While there has been some progress with female junior managers being paid at similar levels to men, the problem of the gender pay gap continues to persist in the higher grades. Men are paid more on average than women doing the same jobs - 42,441 compared to 31,895 but female junior executives now earn more, with an average salary of 21,969 - 602 more than men. The CMI plan further research which will examine what influences have affected the gender pay gap over recent years.

The Chartered Management Institute is the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. They aim to provide practical support and advice to their membership.
