Supporting Kurdistan Women MPs

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

The Kurdistan area in the north of Iraq is an autonomous region with its own young Parliament, they asked the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) to provide training and support for their Members of Parliament. Their women MPs comprise 30% of the Parliament’s MPs and they are keen to make a positive difference in the region.

The Westminster Foundation for Democracy organised a workshop for a number of the women MPs and invited Meg Munn MP, Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat MP, and Dawn Purvis, a former member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, to lead it. The Kurdish MPs wanted to hear how women in the UK have been able to achieve change through working together, both within parties and across party lines. Further sessions were held on how to promote positive political messages in the region and on working with civil society organisations to achieve change.

As both Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Kurdish Region of Iraq as well as Vice-Chair of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy Meg was very pleased to be involved in helping the Kurdish women MPs.

Meg said:

"The women have already achieved important changes through the passing of a law on domestic violence. However as a developing democracy they are keen to learn from our experience so they can make more progress on the many issues that affect Iraq as a post conflict society.

Over the course of the Westminster Foundation programme strong relationships are developing between MPs which will be of benefit to both our countries in the future."
