Electrifying Midland Main Line

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently met representatives from Network Rail to discuss proposals to electrify the Midland Main Line which would allow longer trains. This follows the publication of the rail industries initial Industry Plan which sets out for the government where they believe investment should be made in the period 2014-2019.

Network Rail’s latest analysis shows that the electrification of the Midland Main Line would slash carbon emissions by 11,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to the emissions of over 12,000 cars. The electrification would also cut 30million a year from the cost of running the railway. Other plans include more seats and track improvements to help cut journey times.

Meg says:

“Investment in the Midland Main Line will boost the economy in our region and provide some relief for commuters up and down the country. Passenger numbers have grown significantly over the past decade and the proposals will allow more cost-effective and reliable trains.”
