Changes to South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service

Monday, February 20, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently met the Yorkshire and Humber group of the Fire Brigades Union to discuss the effects that the current cuts are having on service provision and future reductions in frontline services.

In June 2011 South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) adopted a new Service Plan for 2011-13. In 2010/11 their budget was around 60 million - in 2011/12 the government grant has been cut by over 3 million. By 2012/13 the budget will have been cut again by a further 1.2 million with warnings of even greater cuts by 2013/15.

The Service Plan proposes closing 4 fire stations and replacing them with 2 new stations which could mean 140 less front line fire fighters available to respond to emergencies. The cuts will further remove 5 frontline fire appliances from service. The new fire station areas will be much greater in size causing longer distances for fire appliances to travel, increasing the attendance times.

Meg spoke to one of her constituents, a Fire Brigade Union (FBU) member and Sheffield frontline fire fighter, Michael Betts, about these issues. The FBU have responded to the 2011/13 Service Plan with observations and proposals for service delivery changes.

Meg commented:

“Following my meeting with Michael it is clear that the Fire Brigade Union are concerned about the current proposals. They hope to engage with the South Yorkshire Fire Authority in a constructive way, ensuring improvement to these changes.”
