Springs Academy students visit Parliament

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Local MP Meg Munn recently joined students from Springs Academy to take part in a Questions and Answers session during their educational trip to Parliament.

The Houses of Parliament offer a fantastic Education Service to schools and colleges across the country, helping to build young people’s understanding of Parliament and democracy. Students can tour the Palace of Westminster, learning about the amazing buildings and the business that takes place inside. There is also opportunity for the students to get involved in interactive workshops which look at topics such as elections and voting or making laws.

During the question session the students asked Meg about putting questions forward in the House of Commons, particularly on issues that are of interest to her, such the democratisation process in Burma, and how Meg raises constituents concerns in the House. Meg talked about her reasons for becoming an MP and her past Ministerial positions. The students were also interested in discussing the problems that people are experiencing in Sheffield because of the cuts to the NHS.

Meg commented:

“The young people were interested in the work that MP’s do, and I thoroughly enjoyed answering questions about issues that were important to them. I hope they continue to learn more about the world of politics and perhaps there were a couple of budding politicians in the room!”
