Share the Warmth

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently attended an event in Westminster to support the ‘Share the Warmth’ campaign organised by British Gas. They are offering 50 to anyone who can identify a household in need of energy insulation, and a further 50 to that household following their insulation being installed.

The cost of living has gone up over recent years, much faster than our earnings. In this economic environment it’s hard for families to make ends meet. One of the areas that people can face difficulty is energy, but rising energy prices don’t automatically mean that people need to face higher bills. Through energy efficiency people can save money.

Loft insulation can save households up to 175 from their heating bills and cavity wall insulation can save up to 135. According to the Department for Energy and Climate Change nearly half of Britain’s homes do not have adequate basic insulation.  Only 57% of Britain’s lofts have been properly insulated and only 58% of cavity walls have been filled. Most energy companies will offer their customers free insulation; you just need to give them a call.

There are however vulnerable people in Sheffield Heeley and across the country who need more help. Not only do they struggle with their bills, but they are also the least likely to come forward to get the help that is readily available. If you have a friend, or a relative, or just an elderly neighbour, why don’t you see if they are getting their homes made warmer?

When recommending a household for help, neither of you even needs to be a British Gas customer. All you need do is get your friend or relative to call 0800 975 1195, let them know you referenced them and then get paid!

Meg commented:

“This is a great opportunity for our community to come together and help those that need help. I hope together we can identify the vulnerable people and share the support that is available.”
