Fascinating visit to Sheffield Theatres

Monday, March 26, 2012

Recently local MP Meg Munn visited Sheffield Theatres and enjoyed a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour with Chief Executive Dan Bates. She heard about Sheffield Theatre’s 40th anniversary celebrations, including First Time Fridays which is sponsored by East Midlands Trains. First Time Fridays made 40 tickets for this season’s Friday performances available for 40p for those customers who have not visited the Crucible theatre before.

Meg was impressed by the facilities and services offered by the newly renovated Crucible theatre and learnt about the contributions that Sheffield Theatre productions have made to Sheffield’s economy. The Michael Frayn season has drawn crowds from across the country, with 40% of the audience for ‘Copenhagen’ travelling up from London. The theatre is also enjoying a growing reputation with productions such as Othello selling out before opening.

Meg commented:

“The visit to Sheffield Theatres was fascinating. It is a fantastic asset to the cultural life of the city, and an important part of our offer to bring tourist here. Its reputation as a theatre producing plays is gaining ground regionally and nationally - which promises further growth in the number of visitors to the city.

I was also impressed with the efforts made by Sheffield Theatres to reach new audiences and make it accessible for all ages and incomes. With dress rehearsal tickets for just 1, everybody can experience the varied productions on offer.

It was also encouraging to hear about links with other local businesses such as Our Cow Molly which provides thousands of tubs of ice cream every year. It is clear that the whole region is benefitting from Sheffield Theatre’s successes.”
