Getting more women engineers

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Meg Munn MP met Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, Faculty Director of Women in Engineering at the University of Sheffield, to discuss how they could work together to get more female engineers in the UK.

They discussed the different issues and challenges, including how engineering is perceived in the UK by employers and employees. They contrasted this with how other countries, such as Mexico and Norway, manage to succeed in training and supporting female engineers.

Engineering is still a predominantly male sector; however it suffers from serious skills shortages with many businesses reporting that they struggle to recruit qualified staff. Meg and Elena want to support young women to have every opportunity to train and work in engineering, and to help business meet this well-known skills gap.

Meg said:

“There is a big cultural problem in engineering that has to be tackled. Many schools don’t know what engineering has to offer and the opportunities that are available for both boys and girls. I want us to work together in Sheffield to turn this situation around and create jobs for young people.”
