Caravan for one million climate jobs

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

The ‘Climate Jobs Caravan’ visited Tudor Square in Sheffield recently and Meg Munn MP went to find out more about their campaign.

The caravan is visiting over 25 towns and cities across the UK during May, organised by the Campaign against Climate Change Trade Union Group to highlight the creation of one million climate jobs could help solve both the economic and environmental crises we are facing. Local people have organised events, including a public meeting, in each of the areas visited.

The theme of the campaign is based on the Million Climate Jobs report. This argues that the funds are available to create one million climate jobs in renewable energy, public transport, renovating buildings, education and agriculture. The organisers have collected 2,500 signatures from local people on a petition calling for 10,000 climate jobs for Sheffield.

Meg said:

“It was really interesting to meet the volunteers involved in the One Million Climate Jobs campaign. The government is currently investing in large-scale initiatives like the Green Deal, which aim to reduce carbon emissions by improving the energy efficiency of our homes. However, we need the government to make sure the Green Deal will also create jobs for local people, many of whom work for or run small and medium sized companies. By ensuring that it’s not just the big companies that benefit, the scheme will help create more local jobs in Sheffield.”
