Expired foreign coins swell Save the Children funds

Wednesday, February 27, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley has been working with local schools, voluntary groups and individuals to collect foreign coins to aid Save the Children.

The campaign, which was organised by Britain in Europe, was designed to benefit charity and raise awareness of the introduction of the Euro across Europe.

Because of the introduction of the Euro in 12 European countries in January 2002, those coins and currency that holiday-makers have saved will be of no use after February 28th.

Pupils and staff in several schools across Sheffield helped with the collection, foreign coins have come in from Meersbrook Bank Primary School, Oakes Park School, Doctor John Bingham Primary School and Newfield Secondary School. Sheffield Shopmobility generously collected a large amount of coins and other contributions came from all over the city.

Over all the collection of Lira, Pesetas, Francs, Marks and other foreign coins amounted to several hundred pounds Sterling.

Meg Munn MP said “I have been delighted with the response to the “Out with the old, in with the new” campaign. It was estimated that there was over £540m in loose foreign coins lurking in the drawers and cupboards of homes right across Britain. I am proud that Sheffield people have done their bit to help children across the world by collecting some of these. I would like to thank everyone who gave their coins.”
