Better support needed for UK’s six million unpaid carers

Friday, May 25, 2012

Meg Munn MP teamed up with TV presenter and former carer Fiona Phillips to support this year’s Carers Week (18-24 June) which recognises the contribution made by those people who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled. The work they undertake is vital for their families, friends and communities.

The theme for Carers Week 2012 is ‘In sickness and in health’, which acknowledges the strain families face as they see their local services cut back. The campaign calls for better financial and practical support for the diverse range of people who have caring responsibilities.

Research carried out in 2012 found that carers are at breaking point. 47% of unpaid carers said they were made ill by money worries whilst 45% of unpaid carers said that caring had pushed them into debt. Meg paid tribute to these carers and urges more support for them in their caring roles.

Meg commented:

“Thousands of people in Sheffield Heeley sacrifice not only their time, but also their money and their health in order to care for a loved one. It’s vital that they are offered regular breaks from caring, and personal health checks, as part of supporting them in their role.

Across the UK unpaid carers save this country an incredible 119 billion every year. I am taking part in Carers Week to show my respect and appreciation for our carers.”

Carers Week is organised by a partnership of 8 national charities: Age UK, Carers Trust, Carers UK, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, MS Society, and Parkinson’s UK. For more information about local events and activities visit: http://carersweek.org/
