Remembering Every Child

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Meg Munn MP for Sheffield Heeley recently attended the launch of EveryChild’s ‘agenda for action’ in London. The charity is calling on politicians and the public to remember the 24 million children worldwide growing up without the safety and care of a family.

She heard that children without families miss out on education and lack protection from violence and exploitation. At the launch she met campaigner Thomas Moyo, who is the project coordinator for EveryChild Malawi. Thomas’ childhood was blighted by poverty and abuse following his parents’ separation. Spurred on by the desire for a better life, Thomas put his energies into his education and now works with local communities to tackle issues such as child marriage, child labour, and low school attendance. Thanks to his team’s work, the school drop-out and early marriage rate of girls in the community has reduced dramatically.

The launch of EveryChild’s ‘agenda for action’ was after Thomas delivered a letter to Downing Street on the International Day of Families, outlining why the Prime Minister must place the 24 million children without families at the top of the UN’s new development goals. As co-Chair on the UN committee that will establish a new set of development goals, David Cameron will have a unique opportunity to ensure that a focus on growth and economic development is not at the expense of ensuring children have the right to a safe family.

Meg said:

“It was incredibly inspiring to hear campaigners’ stories, and the extensive work of EveryChild. It is vital that we act now and ensure that UK international development work makes child protection a priority.”
