Last chance for children’s heart surgery unit

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has been supporting the Yorkshire-based Children’s Heart Surgery Unit keep their services open for children and families in Sheffield. The future of the unit, based in Leeds, will be announced by the NHS on 4th July.

Meg has asked the NHS and the government for assurance that the clinical standards needed for a safe and sustainable unit will be maintained as part of their final decision. Each unit needs to carry out a minimum of 400 surgical procedures per year to be considered both safe and sustainable.

Meg said:

“Leeds is easily accessible by road and rail and is located in a region with a high population density. It also benefits from the co-location of children’s services on one site. This is something that the Bristol Inquiry into infant deaths during heart surgery describes as the ‘preferred model for the future’ and the British Congenital Cardiac Association describes as ‘essential’.

I have asked the NHS and the government to ensure that their review considers the wealth of evidence provided by the Leeds campaign and to consider carefully what families and health professionals have told them. The outcome of this is vital to the future of many children and families, so I really hope the government and the NHS will consider the needs of both current and future populations as part of their final decision.”
