Making international democratic connections

Monday, June 11, 2012

Recently Meg Munn MP invited Barrie Freeman from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) to visit her at the House of Commons to discuss political developments across North Africa.  Barrie is NDI’s Director for North Africa and was in London to attend an international conference nearby.

NDI is a US not for profit organisation set up to support and strengthen democratic institutions internationally; following the Arab Spring they are working across North Africa to support democratic development. Meg wanted to learn more about their work, including how they support emerging political parties and civil society organisations, as she is vice-chair of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy which undertakes similar work but on a much smaller scale.

After their discussions Barrie had a look round Parliament and spent some time in the gallery of the House of Commons watching the debates. As her work concerns democratic institutions and elections she was fascinated to listen to the day’s debate about proposed changes to electoral registration in the UK.

Meg said:

“Everyone is aware of the big changes that are currently taking place in the Middle East and North Africa. Developing democratic institutions and civil society takes much time and effort. I was pleased to meet up with Barrie and hear about the vital work NDI are doing.”
