Support for Falklands Islanders referendum

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

The Falkland Islands Government have announced that they intend to hold a referendum in the first half of 2013 on the political status of the Falkland Islands. The residents of the islands will be able to vote on whether they want to retain their links with the United Kingdom.

The referendum will be organised by the Falkland Islands Government and will include independent international observers to observe the process and verify its outcome. This process should show the views of the Falklands people in a clear, democratic and incontestable way to the international community.

Currently the Falkland Islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom and have long proclaimed their wish to remain so. There has never been any sign that there is any desire to join Argentina as one of their provinces.

Meg commented:

“I have visited the Falklands Islands and had the opportunity to speak in depth to many of the people there and I have never had any doubt that they wish to remain linked to Britain.

If the principle of self-determination means anything at all, it means that the residents of the Falklands Islands can determine their own future freely and fairly. Whatever the result of the referendum it must be respected by the international community.”
