Pledging support to the SOS campaign

Friday, June 15, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently met members of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) at a Westminster event where the group launched its new eye health campaign Save our Sight (SOS). Around 50% of sight loss is avoidable and the campaign aims to tackle unnecessary sight loss and promote the importance of timely access to treatment.

There are around two million people in the UK with sight problems, with a number at risk of the main causes of blindness - cataract problems, glaucoma, wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is estimated that diabetic eye disease is set to increase by up to 25% in the decade leading up to 2020.

Meg commented:

"I have given my pledge to support the new SOS campaign to improve early diagnosis and access to treatment. At the event I learnt that RNIB’s ratings for treatment policy, for example cataract treatment and glaucoma follow-up appointments, in Sheffield is positive compared to other parts in the region. We need to continue to support these high standards and encourage better results in other areas.”
