Yorkshire 2012 and Beyond

Monday, June 18, 2012

A conference on the economic situation of Yorkshire was recently held in Leeds to which Heeley MP Meg Munn was invited. She was on the panel discussing the role of government and business in creating the environment for a strong manufacturing base alongside Mark Goldstone, Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, and David Workman, Director General, Confederation of Paper Industries.

The conference discussed how to boost regional manufacturing and growth, improve skills and increase research and development in key growth areas, as well as investment in infrastructure. It was attended by politicians across the political spectrum and key people from the private sector. The findings of the conference are being pulled together as a document that can be used to press for investment in the region.

It was organised by the newly founded All Party Parliamentary Group for Yorkshire and Dods, a leading organisation in the provision of political information, and sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire. Meg has been elected as Vice-Chair of the new All Party group.

Meg said:

“Yorkshire is a great place to live and work but we need to do more if we are to ensure local people have jobs opportunities now and in the future. I spoke about the importance of developing the right skills for manufacturing, which in South Yorkshire means a focus on engineering and technology as advanced manufacturing takes off with strong digital and creative industries.

Ensuring that all those with the interest and potential can access training is vital this means girls as well as boys and people from all socio-economic backgrounds.”
