Help for Sleep Apnoea sufferers

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Meg Munn MP has been campaigning for several years to raise awareness of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, particularly the effects it has on road safety where it can cause undiagnosed drivers to fall asleep at the wheel. She recently visited Solutions for Snoring (S4S), a dental laboratory in her constituency to find out about the latest products the company are manufacturing to help breathing during sleep.

Matt Everett, the Technical Director of S4S, showed Meg around the various work spaces where staff make the patients orders, using their personal moulds. They have dental splints which are an alternative for people with mild to moderate sleep apnoea to the CPAP machine and oxygen mask worn by patients while they sleep.

She was pleased to hear that the company encourages the raising of awareness of undiagnosed sleep apnoea, a condition which can lead to other health problems such as high blood pressure and heart attacks. Since her last visit in 2009, the company have developed the oral apparatus used to treat the condition.

Approximately 1000 dental practices now offer screening for sleep apnoea and this figure has increased in recent years. S4S undertake training for dentists and also provide dental equipment for patients who grind their teeth.

Meg said:

‘The symptoms of sleep apnoea need to be identified early so that patients can be diagnosed and pointed in the right direction for treatment.  It’s good that a local manufacturing company is expanding their workforce and making a real difference to peoples’ lives with their products. Sleep apnoea is a serious health issue that needs addressing to avoid devastating accidents on the road.’
