Getting the nurses view

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Meg Munn MP met representatives from the Royal College of Nursing to learn more about their work and to hear their members concerns. They discussed the ‘Frontline First’ campaign, which urges nursing staff to speak out about budget cuts that impact on patient care, expose waste in the system and champion nurse-led innovation.

The Royal College of Nursing has a large and growing membership of around 410,000 nurses and health care assistants, three-quarters of which work within the NHS. Women make up around 90% of the registered nursing workforce. Many nurses are currently being affected by the raft of changes which are being brought in by the coalition government.

Meg said:

“It is crucial that politicians of all parties understand the issues that are affecting the day to day work of nurses. As the NHS in England struggles to save 20 billion, and with the largest top-down restructure since its creation, I’m concerned about the impact that the changes are having on the ground. The Health Secretary must act on what nurses are saying as part of the Frontline First campaign so that patient care can be protected.”
