Sheffield Star campaigns with Meg on scam phone texts

Friday, August 29, 2003

This article is reproduced from the Sheffield Star, Action Desk, August 29th 2003 and was written by reporter David Walsh.

ACTION Desk today hails a victory for mobile phone users in our campaign against unsolicited text messages offering prizes. Stephen Timms, minister for e-Commerce, has announced the government is introducing a ban by the end of October. The move comes after we contacted Meg Munn, MP for Heeley, about a scam which saw James Glew, aged 25, of Frecheville, Sheffield charged £400 for receiving 1,000 premium rate messages he never asked for. His troubles began when he responded to one text saying he'd won a DVD player.

In doing so he 'signed' a contract permitting text companies to bombard him with messages - many of them sexually explicit - and charge up to 42p for the privilege. Ms Munn, agreed the practice was outrageous and backed our campaign. Today she said: "I'm delighted the government has taken this issue seriously and that within a short time these messages will be illegal. "It has been all too easy for mobile phone users to run up large bills by responding to these messages." In announcing the ban Stephen Timms, minister for e-Commerce, said: "I should like to congratulate The Star in helping to bring this to the attention of the public." Meanwhile, James, of Hopefield Avenue, continues to fight to clear his debts.
