Sheffield’s own TV station

Monday, July 30, 2012

In May Ofcom announced that Sheffield would be one of the first areas in the UK to have its own local TV station. Following this Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn met Alan Powell, former editor of the Star, who is chairman of one of the companies who plan to put in a bid to run the new station.

Sheffield is in the first round of local 12-year TV licences, along with 20 other areas including Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Newcastle. Due to broadcast on Digital Terrestrial TV, (Freeview), the local TV channels may choose to offer their services on satellite, cable and online.

Meg said:

“I believe that Sheffield having its own TV station will be a really positive development for our city. I hope the successful organisation will work hard to enhance the city’s reputation by showing the good work that happens within local communities.

It was interesting to meet Alan and hear their plans should they win the bid to run this new TV station. Whilst I cannot endorse or back any of the organisations, I am happy to meet them to discuss their plans.”

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 13th August 2012. Ofcom will then assess all applications against the statutory criteria.
