Backing the Bees

Friday, August 3, 2012

Meg Munn MP recently joined Friends of the Earth staff and volunteers at an event in the Peace Gardens to highlight the plight of Britain’s bees. Campaigners had organised a Bee breakfast as part of ‘The Bee Cause’ campaign to show the wealth of food that is made possible by the humble bee.

Bees are crucial for much of the food we eat, including most fruit and vegetables. They are important for our economy, pollinating 75% of our food crops. Without the bee it would cost UK farmers 1.8 billion a year to pollinate crops. A world without bees would mean higher food production costs, which would result in higher food prices for everyone.

Meg said:

“I was fascinated to learn more about the plight of our British bees and shocking to discover that three bumblebee species are already extinct. We can all make a difference by planting flowers rich in nectar in our gardens or window boxes.

The Bee Cause campaign has lots of helpful advice on how we can all get involved. Let’s support our Bees!”

Friends of the Earth also calls on the government to adopt and implement a National Bee Action plan. For more information about ‘The Bee Cause’ campaign visit: http://www.foe.co.uk/what_we_do/the_bee_cause_35033.html
