Co-operators together

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Manchester was the host for this year’s Co-operative Party conference, with events taking place in the Co-operative Group’s headquarters at New Century House. Delegates from Co-operative Party branches across the country gathered to discuss policy issues - from developing more co-operative housing, international issues including Fairtrade and to hear how Co-operative Councils are putting new ideas into practice.

The Co-operative Party is the political arm of the co-operative movement and promotes the development of co-operative and mutual organisations as a better way to organise and run society. Meg is one of 29 Labour and Co-operative MPs in the House of Commons and she took part in a session during which delegates quizzed MPs on a wide range of issues.

Meg said:

"The Co-operative Party achieved a great deal during the last government with the passing of new legislation to ensure that co-operatives can compete on a level playing field with other organisations. Labour and Co-operative MPs continue to promote mutual ideas with the current government, but unfortunately despite their warm words about co-operatives little is happening. Recently they had the chance to make Northern Rock a mutual organisation again, but refused to do so.

It is good to see that many Labour run councils are applying co-operative models to the services they are running. I’m sure that many ideas being discussed at the conference will be in Labour’s manifesto at the next election."
